First time to Australia

My husband & & will visit Australia & New Zealand for the first time in January, 2008. We will start in Sydney for 5 days & then board our ship for more adventures in Melbourne & several ports in New Zealand. Any must see information & any general information such as weather in Jan. & Feb. would be helpful. Thank you, Beckaj 5  out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

The weather should be nice but it can be hot. I was in Melbourne last Feb and it was 98 (Farenheit). Sydney was perfect at that time - 70's and 80's (Farenheit). In Sydney, there are lots of things to see and do. If you get a chance to go to Katoomba and the Blue Mountains region, I highly recommend it. Having a drink at the Opera House Bar in the evening is a must do as well. Take the ferry to Manly - the ride alone is worth the trip. In Melbourne, we did the Little Penguin Parade which was amazing. Take the direct tour though - the all day one makes some rather tedious stops. The wine country outside the city is very nice and we did an amazing tour to see wild kangaroos and koalas with a tour operator you can check out at echidnawalkabout.com.au Have a wonderful time! I've been to Sydney, Hobart and Melbourne and all three were amazing. If you do get to Tasmania, the Bruny Island Charter is a really cool boat trip on the Tasman Sea. Going to the top of Mt Wellington and to the Tahune Forest are great too. Its a really beautiful place and there is a lot to see and do there. If you're in Hobat on Saturday, the Salamanca market will be in full swing and you can't miss it. Food, handmade crafts and souveniers - its a great shopping and dining adventure. In Melbourne, we stayed on the Yarra River and it was a great area for venturing out into the city. We went and saw the Little Blue Penguin Parade which was really awesome, but take the short tour - the all day one takes you to a couple places that really aren't all that and you can spend that time exploring the city instead. For a really nice outdoor wildlife experience, try Echidna Walkabout Tours - they take you into the bush to see wild kangaroos, koalas and other animals and treat you to a nice lunch outdoors. It was a great day. All three cities to me were fabulous and I'd go back again in a heartbeat. We never felt uncomfortable walking around any of the cities day or night - very friendly, clean and safe. The public transportation is easy to use in Sydney and Melbourne, so don't be afraid to just go wandering! Have a great time! 5  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?
