buses aren't usually full till peak hr, don't bother bout trains cos they're never on time but some areas can only be accessed by train. taxis cost alot, monorail is da cheapest way to get around the city and lightrail is good value

While Sydneysiders like to complain about their trains, as a frequent visitor, I love them. It's a quick and cheap way to move about the city, suburbs, and well into the country. Also, busses are plentiful and connect easily with trains and ferries. The view from the ferries can't be beat, and for any cross-harbour trip, there's no better way. Though busses, and some trains might make the trip a little faster. He's right about the monorail and light rail, but they're pretty limited on where they can take you. Where all do you want to go?--daveandmelanie Do you find this valuable? |

What you say is true. The Manly ferry is a beautiful trip. I figured the cheapest way to get around Sydney on all Government transport (ie Cityrail, STA Buses, STA Ferries) is the Day tripper.

When I was there, we took advantage of buses, trains and the ferries. We took the train one day into Sydney proper from Circular Quay. It was cheap, quick and I have to say much cleaner than most public trains I've ever been on. The bus we took also from Circular Quay to get to Blacktown and that was also inexpensive and easy to use. We never once felt like we would be lost. However, the ferry was my favorite. We took that to Taronga Zoo, Manly and Darling Harbour on more than one occassion and its not just a great way to get around, its so beautiful.

You can also buy what is called a Travel Ten ehich gives you 10 bus trips (be sure to check how far you need to go first though! they sell them by 'Sections' say you can get a 1-2 sections Travel Ten or 3-5 sections etc.) Can get them at most newagencies but NO they are presale so you can't get them on the bus =) here's a good link : http://www.sydneybuses.info/tickets/bus-only-tickets/single-ride-and-travel-ten.htm also if you're catching buses, do be smart and time it during non-peak hours or be prepare to watch full buses drive right pass without stopping =P Do you find this valuable? |

My cousin had been to Australia recently and to get around Sydney he had considered http://www.colourfultrips.com/ for some good tours. He had been to the blue mountains and the hunter valleys and enjoyed the wine there.

All the bus, train and ferry advice is good, but don't miss the Manly to Spit Bridge hike. Take the ferry from Circular Quay over to Manly and start the walk. It is just fantastic and meanders over rocks, through trees, along by beaches and in amongst neighbourhoods. Here is a map: http://www.manlyaustralia.com.au/information/what_to_do/walks/walkway.asp
