Water Puppetry Part of Vietnam’s Cultural Heritage
"Not watching a performance of water puppetry means not visiting Vietnam yet". This is the practical advice appearing in many guidebooks in Vietnam. And it is so true that most visitors to Vietnam try to watch a performance of water puppetry at least once. And after the performance, most of them are excited and always repeat this advice to their relatives who are going to take a tour to the beautiful country named Vietnam. Rising a Legend
Ha Long literally means descending dragon(s). According to local myth, long ago when the Vietnamese were fightiing Chinese invaders, the gods sent a family of dragons to help to defend the land. The family of dragons began spitting out jewels and jade. These jewels turned into the islands and islets dotting the bay, linking together to form a great wall against the invaders. The people kept their land safe and formed what later became the country of Vietnam. After that, dragons were interested in peaceful sightseeing of the Earth and decided to live here then. The place where the Mother Dragon flew down was names Ha Long, the place where the dragon children attended upon their mother was called Bai Tu Long Island, and the place where the dragon children wriggled their tails violently was called Bach Long Vy Island. Full-moon Festival
Full-moon or lantern festival is held on the 15th day of each lunar month. On these evening, the town turns all of its street lamps, flourescent lights and televisions, leaving the Old Quarter bathed in the warm glow of couloured silk, glass, paper and bamboo lanterns. These scenes bring visitors back to the 19th century at the place where there were neither high-rise buildings nor advertising-neon-light supermarkets. Here and there in the street corners or on the sidewalk sat old women by their food-selling bamboo frames whose baskets containe food and are surrounded by clients eating and talking excitedly. And in wood-fronted shops, women in traditional dress sitting at a desk, bathed in the light of a lantern while men were absorbed in a candlelit game of Chinese checkers outside. |

There are numerous options for exploration around the immediate region. A short walk down hill can bring you to an old French hydroelectric station at Cat-Cat village, while a day long trek from Sapa down into the valley below - roughly 14 kilometers long can take you through some beautiful landscape and visits to Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van village. The more energetic can tackle a three day hike up Mount Fansipan. In addition, you can sample the charms of the Taphin valley and visit the ruins of Our Lady of Peace monastery or enjoy a jaunt to Thac Bac (Silver waterfall). You can also arrange home stays with local people, in a Tay home built on stilts in Lao Chai or Ban Ho.
Nothing can prepare you for the riot of colour and activity at the regional markets that can be found dotted around the Sapa region. Make sure you have brought enough film or your camera's batteries are fully charged, as they are a photographer's delight! The local markets in Sapa includes Muong Hum and Bac Ha market on Sunday, Can Cau market on Saturday and Coc Ly market on Tuesday Littlevienamtours Co.,Ltd Website: www.littlevietnamtours.com.vn Email: info@littlevietnamtuours.com.vn |
