Tasmania Tasmania, once known as the "Apple Isle," is the smallest of Australia's states and is located off the south eastern tip of the mainland. Tasmania was settled by the British as a penal colony and convicts were first transported to what was then called Van Diemen's Land, in 1804. Penal settlements were established at Sullivan's Cove (Hobart), Maria Island, Sarah Island, and Port Arthur. The ruins of the convict gaols can still be sen in these places, particularly at Port Arthur which has been carefully preserved and has many convict related activities for tourists. Tasmania is also home to the famous Tassie Devil.

Hobart, Tasmania’s capital, with its stunning harbour and historic buildings is one of the most attractive Australian cities. It’s the perfect first step for exploration of the southern part of the island state.

If you are wanting an up-close and informational look at Tasmania's iconic marsupial, I suggest checking out Devils@Cradle, a tasmanian devil conservation and research facility located near Cradle Mountain. At D@C you can gain heaps of knowledge about the tassie devil (as well as the ill-fated Thylacine), watch the devils interact in a natural habitat, and even have a pat of one if the opportunity arises. D@C offers day- and night-time tours, including a feeding-tour enabling you to sneak a peek at the devils mealtime behavior. The staff and wildlife biologists on hand are extremely passionate and knowledgeable about all things devil. Take the time to visit this amazing facility; definitely a don't-miss tassie experience!
